Babiesbabybabe

I have not given much thought to childbirth before this course.  When I did give it thought this is what I pictured.

Me laying in hospital bed, screaming.  Being in sever pain.  Trying to push out some ten pounder, laying down.

After we watch the giving birth video I had a total paradigm shift.  The picture in my head shifted to a birthing center, midwifes, pool, standing up.  All these new possibilities.

It really resinated with me when we talked about the medicalization of women's bodies.  I know so little about my body, and even less before this course.

When I think about giving birth it isn't as terrifying, and alien.  That's what changed for me after I viewed the video.  What shifted in your mind? Or did anything?

  1. First of all, "trying to push out some ten pounder" almost had me off my chair!

Secondly, the childbirth video was also a paradigm change for me as well. As a male, you can obviously guess that I had no idea there were options other than going to a hospital to deliver a baby. I'm so glad to be educated with the mid-wife opportunity. I understand it is not the right option for everyone. However, if I am ever blessed with a wife who becomes pregnant someday, I am equipped with the benefits and advantages of an alternative approach to delivering.

  2. Haha I love the way your mind sees yourself having a child. I agree with the first comment about almost having me off my chair, it is hysterical, but I have had the same thoughts. When I imagine myself giving birth, I imagine the most pain I could ever endure. Screaming. Bleeding. Sweating in pain. Holding my husband's hand ever so hard. But after watching Ricki Lake give birth in the bath tub and seeing that it was not as bad as movies make it to be, I would give it a shot.

I like knowing a male view on the film we watched and hearing their opinions. Thank you Christopher Noack!
